The goal of Raf Simons’ AW2004 collection was to explore the tension between rebellion and conformity, illustrated by its reference to youth subcultures and the strict codes of institutional dress. When strictly examining the formal nature of the produced garments, one may think the collection was a study on Belgian school uniforms or academy-inspired tailoring under the lens of punk and post-punk aesthetics… and they would be right. The rebellious undertone was further illustrated by subtle distortions and oversized proportions, creating silhouettes that challenged conventional uniformity while maintaining an undercurrent of refinement.
