Maarten Van Severen (1956–2005) was a celebrated Belgian designer and architect known for his rigorous approach to form, material, and functionality. Trained initially in architecture at Ghent’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Van Severen began creating furniture in the mid-1980s, developing a signature style marked by extreme minimalism, precision craftsmanship, and an uncompromising attention to detail. He favored industrial materials such as aluminum, plywood, and polycarbonate, which he refined into essential forms—chairs, tables, and lighting that exude clarity and purpose. His iconic works, like the .03 chair for Vitra and his U-Line series, exemplify a design philosophy rooted in structural honesty and aesthetic restraint. Though his career was cut short by illness, his work continues to influence contemporary design, celebrated for its timeless quality, conceptual purity, and quietly radical presence.
