Jean Paul Gaultier

AW2001 Optical Illusion Faces Coat

The tailoring side of Gaultier’s menswear oeuvre has been overshadowed by his infamous gaudy opus, however the house’s unique androgynous approach to construction in regards to the “menswear” silhouettes deserves attention.

The print itself is stitched onto the surface of the jacket, which induces an illusionary effect in which these shadowy humanoid faces morph from abstraction to palpability in any given viewer’s peripheral vision. Gaultier’s approach to the construction of this jacket integrated ironically passé motifs onto a modernist silhouette. He integrated exaggerated shoulder support, leather appliqué detailing around the cuffs and collar, and an elongated slit down the rear base onto a non-tapered broad draped cut body.

COVERAGE

For his Autumn / Winter 2001 show, Jean Paul Gaultier took a much darker approach to the optical illusion motifs executed in several of his previous collections. The haunting semblance of recurrent shrouded figures hidden within the prints that adorned the garments forged a surreal atmosphere akin to McQueen’s runway presentation aesthetic.
