COVERAGE

In today’s fashion climate, the line between streetwear and high fashion has been blurred. A growing majority of today’s youth want to style themselves through their own curated collection of exclusive pieces, and so this younger market influences the choices made by major fashion houses. These houses weren’t always producing graphic t-shirts and athletic style sneakers – in fact, in the early days of menswear this would be unheard of, and possibly risky to do such. You wouldn’t relate Issey Miyake, a name that is synonymous with the avant-garde fashion scene, as a pioneer of this aforementioned trend. Around the mid-70s he launched his “Issey Sport” line, which was specifically targeted at the growing style conscious youth in Japan, as well as the growing market in the west. Through this brand, Tsumori Chisato became a well-known name in fashion circles way back in 1977 when she was appointed chief designer, right out of the prestigious “Bunka Fashion School” in Tokyo. Under her supervision the name was later changed to “I.S. Chisato Tsumori Design,” which was campaigned with a low-key hit logo that still remains entirely distinguishable to those in the know today. Throughout this brand’s lifespan a diverse collection of pieces were released. Retrospectively, they will be remembered for their functionality, casual nature, and innovation, which ultimately translates to architect Louis Sullivan’s theory of “form follows function.”
