YOHJI YAMAMOTO

Concertina Pin-Up Shirt
AW2003

DESCRIPTION

The focal point for Yohji Yamamoto’s AW2003 collection was oddly enough the attire associated with “pimp culture” in the west. Halfway through this collection however the music shifted, and several models sported various iterations of oversized sailor coats with patches on the arms embellished with artwork reminiscent of sailor tattoos. This shirt hails from this side of the collection. Two sailor-esque artworks are printed via sublimation onto Yohji’s staple baggy silk silhouette.

COVERAGE

Yohji’s through-lines for the printed work in this collection were that the lifted pin-up images must represent the “idealistic” woman of that time/culture. His fascination with the feminine ideal was a key motivator behind his original womenswear collections, and it’s interesting to see how this same subversionary angle translates to menswear.
