SPRING/SUMMER 2000

Season Coverage

Synonymous with her previous seasons, Ann Demeulemeester presented a poetic, down to earth collection that divulged her spiritual essence. Expressions such as “Curious wishes feathered the air,” and “Morning found the field bright” covered sheer blouses and free-flowing dresses that added to her tailoring mystique. Following the ethos she established in 1992, in dissolving gender norms, Demeulemeester presented menswear and womenswear under one roof and one runway. Svelte narrow tops contrasted by wide trousers were seen to brace the bodies of men and women alike. The androgyny of Ann Demeulemeester’s collections, where everything is unisex and uniform, is inspired by her close friend Patti Smith. Patti smith developed a menswear-inspired look, opting for collared shirts, loose neckties, and blazers worn with pants and boots. This would be reflected throughout Demeulemeester’s career as a designer.
